One day a few months after he had sold his company he suddenly had a burning desire to return to the area that he had grown up in. He was walking along when he noticed that there were lots of buildings which used to be shops but were now just lying empty. He knew that this was a very poor area and that there was a huge problem with unemployment, so he decided then and there to do something about it. He gathered local community groups together and started a business advice service. There he would give advice and help with funding for young people who wanted to start their own businesses. Now that area is completely thriving and people from far and wide come there to go shopping. He has completely improved both the area and the lives of people who live there. Also at the end of the article he said that even though he liked making money and working in finance he always felt that he was just going through the motions. Now that he is working for the community and changing people’s lives he’s found the one thing that was missing all those years; passion for what he was doing.

Phrases:

(To have a) burning desire: this is a desire that you cannot stop. It usually pushes you into taking action.

Example: I always had a burning desire to go to India, so when I was 30 I spent 6 months working there.

Far and wide: a large area. This is used when speaking about a product/service or fame.

Example 1: People came from far and wide to see the concert.

Example 2: He is known far and wide as a great motivational speaker.

To go through the motions: this is when you just do the bare minimum with no enthusiasm.

Example: Even though it was good money I just felt like I was going through the motions so I quit my job and trained to become a therapist.
